Give us your examples of parks and planes co-existing
|

Send us your examples of parks and planes co-existing. |
Officials
of the Chicago Park District are being quoted in the paper as saying:
"There
are no parks where airstrips are a compatible use."
Baloney!
This is flat out untrue. There are hundreds if not
thousands of airports in the U.S. alone where parks and airports co-exist
side by side.
In the Chicago area alone, Palwaukee Airport is adjacent
to the Cook County Forest Preserve, and DuPage Airport is adjacent to a
golf course. Many small airports exist right in state and national
parks. Many more have parks adjacent with observation areas to enjoy
the excitement of planes taking off and landing.
Help us prove them wrong!

WeblinksMonroe Custer Airport CommentsMonroe has a 5000' runway 3/21. The airport is owned by the City of Monroe and is adjecent to soccer fields, softball diamonds and "Munson Park". The people that visit the park seem to enjoy the sight of GA planes doing takeoffs and landings, And there seems to be no problem with safety.

Barry Kirschner has installed a soccer field at the west end of the airport, a motocross course, a volleyball field with sand and two courts, a lounge with two pool tables, and an olympic size swimming pool.
All of these are within 200 ft of the runway and taxiways. It is a beautiful setting.

The park is at a slightly lower elevation than the airport property and is less than 100m from RW's 13L and 13R. The park is a popular and heavily used venue in Dallas. http://www.airnav.com/airport/KRBD CommentsKRDB has two parks and one country club within the vicinity of the airport. Red Bird Park is less than 100m East of the airport property. Boulder Park is adjacent the South side of the airport property (across Red Bird Ln.) and approx. 600m from the threshold of RW 35. Oak Cliff Country Club is approx. 700m Southeast of the airport property and approximately 850m from the threshold of RW 31. The airport services GA aircraft and helicopters (including Dallas police helicopters). I hope this helps in refuting the proposterous notion that parks and airports cannot coexist.

The Norfolk Botanical Gardens (the www.nbgs.org link), located in Norfolk,
Virginia is positioned right next to the Norfolk International Airport. With
eight airlines and nearly 200 daily flights, the Norfolk Airport is a very busy
airport. The Norfolk Botanical Gardens is so close to the airport that there is
an airport observation deck, which is near enough to one of the taxiways, you
can wave to the pilots! People seem to ENJOY watching aircraft arrive and
depart. The rest of the gardens run pretty much parallel to the airport's
runway, 5/23. The Nofolk Bontanical Gardens, which is a beautiful and peaceful
place, is certainly not affected by the aircraft. The INTERNATIONAL airport does
not take away from the gardens one bit (I've been there countless times and my
family even has a membership). In conclusion, it is possible to have even a
MAJOR airport situated RIGHT NEXT to a beautiful place with a park-like
atmosphere. To view some of the fantastic things the Norfolk Botanical Gardens
has to offer, just visit the top link (www.nbgs.org). To view a map at mapquest
displaying how close the airport is to the gardens, follow the long link (sorry
about the length; hopefully you can copy and paste!). I hope this information
truly shows that a really nice outdoors area is able to be located next to a
large, busy airport. Thank you for your time, and best of luck in your possible

The golf course is a pristine 18 hole championship golf course that has a
small airport located at the center of the course. You can't look up without
seeing aircraft landing or taking off. In fact, there is a tunnel that goes
underneath the runway in order to make the distance between holes shorter. This
is a great example of how a park and a airport can work very well off of each
other.

I
am a California based pilot and one shining example that I can provide of
a multiple use complex is the Corona airport. (AJO)There is a fine little
citizens park on the south side of the field. The airport itself is nestled
between national forest and the 91 freeway, residential as well as
industrial business park structures flank it's perimeter. This is a high
density A/C traffic corridor to LA and Orange Co situated airports. I have
seen on numerous occasions families playing with their children in the
park with the impressionable ones peering through the fence watching the
planes in action. Isn't that was how most of us got our start anyway? |

Buenos
Aires, Argentina |
I
can not think of a finer example of parks and airports existing together
than in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Their domestic airport is actually called
"Aeroparque Jorge Newberry" and even within the name one can see
that it is supposed to be an "air park". The facility is only
separated by the Avenida Libertador from the Rio de La Plata, which at
this point is extremely wide and similar to lake Michigan. Their are
restaurants and tennis clubs along the shore, and on the western edge of
the air park is the municipal golf course. Pedestrians are free to walk
about the perimeter, and captivate themselves in the majesty of the
planes. All of this takes place within no more than 4 kms of the center of
Argentina's capital. |

Per
your request for information, one of the "neatest" airports I
have been to (Meigs notwithstanding!
No competition here ....) is the public use airport at Andover, NJ. The identifier is 12N.
The airport is located in the Kittatinny State Park and is
technically owned by the NJ Forest Service I believe.
It has parallel 1800' asphalt and grass runways, with lakes off
each end of the strip. It
makes for a great photo. |

The
airport located within the boundaries of Kittatinny Valley State Park is
owned by the State of New Jersey and operated by the New Jersey Forest
Fire Service. It is used as a general aviation airport. Airplane watching
is a popular pastime. During fire seasons, the airport serves as an air
attack base to facilitate aerial attacks on forest fires using helicopters
and commercial spray planes for water drops on forest fires. Aeroflex-Andover
Airport is operated by the NJ Forest Fire Service as a general aviation
airport and as a base for aerial forest fire suppression. |

Please
consider Mackinaw Island, MI (MCD).
It is a beautiful setting with an airport right in the middle of it. For
me the six-hour drive is the reason I will only go to Mackinaw Island by
small plane. It is a two hour flight making a "day trip"
possible instead of an over night trip.
If you have never flown into MCD try it! It's a beautiful island
and it's has a convenient access point as well...the airport. |

Whitted Field in St Petersburg is bordered by the USF Campus, Park &
Yacht Club just SE of downtown St Petersburg.
A viewing area is set up on the west side.
The relationship with the neighbors will be improved, I'm sure, now
that funds are available for airport renovation & expansion.
(Special note: SPG is very similar to Meigs Field (waterfront location,
etc.) and--when given the opportunity in 2003, the voters of St.
Petersburg voted NOT to close the airport for parkland.) |

Airport on the west side of Rockford in Illinois, is a private open for
public use airport. We have been working for years to regain land that can
be used for camping and parking to watch the activity of flight at our
airport. Cottonwood is a favorite place where the non flying public can
come with their children just to see the airplanes. |

C98-Lake
Village Airport |
Lake
Village, IN |
The
Lake Village Airport (C98), Lake Village, IN, (a privately-owned
public-use airport) is directly adjacent to the Indiana Lasalle State Fish
and Wildlife Area (which is run by the Indiana DNR). The park lies
directly adjacent to the end of runway 36 and under the approaches of
runway 18. The airport and park are near the intersection of Indiana State
Road 10 and (how ironic) US 41. The 'American Discovery Trail' passes in
close proximity to the airport. The
park is easily accessible by simply walking from the airport into the
park. This area straddles the Kankakee River and contains many examples of
common game and some endangered and rare wildlife species. Although
primarily a fishing and hunting area, the river is also an attraction for
boaters and canoers. The airport is also a few miles north of the Kankakee
Sands Preserve, Kankakee Sands Project, and Conrad Station Savanna of The
Nature Conservancy. So as you
can see, we're pretty much surrounded by set-aside green space, which is
fantastic. The airport is an ideal access point since the nearest
commercial and public transportation is at least a half-hour drive away! |

Cincinnati,

Not
only does it show that parks and planes co-exist ( 5 diferent parks are
within this photo ), Cincinnati has found a way to get the airport to PAY
for the upkeep of the golf course, driving range, and the two softball
fields! Yes, perfectly legal use of FAA funds to support city parks!
FARs allow the use of FAA funds to "maintain an airport
clearway" adjacent to airport property!
A Parks Department dream come true! FAA funds for city social
programs. In this paticular
case the golf course, driving range, and softball fields are actually on
airport property, but that need not be the case, the clearways simply need
to be adjacent to the airport to make the airport money legal for use at
the facilities. The airport includes two soccer fields off the south end
of the field between the parallels, three general parks on the hill to the
west overlooking the airport, and the facilities on airport property at
the north end of the field. |
